Britney's New Dude (Old New dude)

TMZ is reporting

Our sources say over the last few months Adnan has been getting into The Summit, the gated community where Brit lives. They have been "together," though we can't say it's still going on. We know they have been texting back and forth, at times complaining that Daddy Jamie is too "controlling" by trying to the put kibosh on the relationship.

But here's the deal. Daddy Jamie's job is to be controlling -- that's what a conservator does. And, sources tell us, Jamie's concern over his daughter seeing Adnan is not just his opinion -- the doctors who are treating Brit have told him it would be a bad thing for Brit to hook up with the dude.

Stay tuned.

SPENCER IS SORRY!!

Spencer Pratt has apologized to Mary-Kate Olsen for calling her "the less cute twin."

Pratt, 24, fired off a tersely-written statement to Usmagazine.com after Olsen, 22, told David Letterman The Hills star used to throw temper tantrums during their high school soccer games.

"I apologize for getting caught up in trash talking, but she brought up an emotional subject when she mentioned the soccer stuff," Pratt tells Us exclusively.

"I know Dave was just doing his job in asking her," he went on. "He's the best in the game at that."

Pratt even admitted he was a bit envious of the twin.

"I respect Mary Kate as a business-woman," he said. "I'm secretly jealous of her. I want my face on a lunchbox, too!"

Sources told Us that the Olsen-Pratt fight began after he sold high school photos of a tipsy-appearing Olsen to Star magazine.

Britney Gibson?

National Enquirer is reporting that Mel tried to hook Britney up with her son!
Somehow i doubt this. ;D

Mel Gibson tried to play matchmaker between his son and Britney Spears, it has been claimed.

According to American tabloid the National Enquirer, the 'Braveheart' actor tried to hook Britney up with one of his twin sons, Edward -- who was recently in rehab for cocaine and alcohol addiction.

Mel thought his son -- who has turned his life around since he was admitted to the Cri-Help rehab facility in Hollywood last year -- could help the troubled Toxic singer do the same.

A source tells the publication, "Mel felt Ed would be a great influence on Brit, and if the relationship turned into romance, all the better."

Mel then arranged a meeting between the pair at Britney's Hollywood Hills home last March, says the source.

"He sincerely believed that his son could help Britney stay on the straight and narrow and that they might hit it off as a couple as well," the source adds.

But Spears refused to see Ed, and hid from him and Mel as soon as they arrived at her house.

The source continues, "She hid from them for most of the night. Mel and his son spent most of their evening talking to her bodyguards!"

Though his matchmaking didn't work, Britney has been touched by his offers of support.

"Mel has become her close confidante," says the source. "Mel's helped out other stars, such as Robert Downey Jr. -- and he'd love to see Britney do as well as Robert has."

Christina on her new album in GLAMOUR Aug 2008,

The last time I interviewed Christina Aguilera for Glamour, it was in October 2006 and she was gearing up for her Back to Basics world tour. After I watched her grueling rehearsal, we sat down in her dressing room for a late-night chat. At the time, she was a confessed workaholic with a penchant for severe red lips, towering stilettos and perfectly manicured nails. She rarely met my eyes during the interview--a technique, she told me at the time, that helped her gather her thoughts--and while she was articulate, she seemed to choose her words very carefully. Almost two years later, I meet a very different Christina: The first thing I notice is that she looks me directly in the eyes--a nice improvement. She's relaxed and eager to talk about life with her six-month-old son, Max, and her husband of nearly three years, music exec Jordan Bratman. Her appearance is softer too. She wears her hair in a tousled ponytail and apologizes for her unmanicured nails. But as we talk about her career, it's clear that Aguilera's focus is as razor-sharp as ever: She's been working out 90 minutes a day to get back to her prebaby body, not to mention launching a new perfume called Inspire, promoting a jewelry line with designer Stephen Webster and working on an album that's set for release later this year. (Oh, and the woman's still a night owl: We meet at 10 P.M. at a West Hollywood lounge because she wanted to spend a full day with baby Max.) What else is new in this 27-year-old's life? Read on!

GLAMOUR: You're obviously back into fighting shape, so let's discuss this workout of yours: boxing, running backward on a treadmill while going uphill, crunches, weights, pull-ups--it sounds brutal.

CHRISTINA AGUILERA: [Laughs.] I hate working out--I have to mentally push myself through it. I can get very whiny, saying things like, "I can't do it!"

GLAMOUR: Does your trainer crack the whip when you get like that?

CA: No--I can't deal with having someone barking at me. Mean training is not motivating to me at all; I like to be comforted [through my workout]. All my trainer has to do is say nicely, "I want you to do 200 bicycles; go right through it and don't stop." Then I'll know she's serious and I'll do it. I started out not being able to do man push-ups; pull-ups were a big one too. Now I can do five in a row.

GLAMOUR: You look great, Christina. How quickly did you notice a change in your body?

CA: Being the perfectionist that I am, my attitude was, this had better hurry up--I want results! My trainer kept saying, "Give it time, you're looking great." Everyone around me was saying they could see a difference, but, you know, you're hardest on yourself. I did see my stomach get flatter and tighter and more muscle definition.

GLAMOUR: What did you like the least about your postbaby body and what did you like the most?

CA: Well, I was OK with the booty and the boobs! [Laughs.] My stomach was really where I carried my weight. Toward the end of my pregnancy, I felt really big--I gained about 40 pounds, which is a lot for my size. My hips also changed significantly. And my feet grew from a size 5 to a size 7 in flats--thank God they [went back to normal]. I would have been so depressed if I had to get rid of my shoe collection!

GLAMOUR: Let's talk about your new album: Can we expect to see you reinvent yourself as you did for Back to Basics?

CA: I just started recording it, but I can tell you that this record is all about fun. I'll be referencing Pop Art, Andy Warhol's art. So it will [sound] fun and fast-paced, and visually, it will be full of color, which is how it's going to tie in with my new fragrance, Inspire [in stores next month].

GLAMOUR: So Warhol, Pop Art--will it have a sixties sound to it?

CA: I want it to be a surprise! But there's also going to be a modern element to it that comes from my love of Tokyo.

GLAMOUR: I used to live there!

CA: Really? [Jordan] and I vacation there. There's such excitement and energy. It's just a zillion people walking around--it's an incredible place.
GLAMOUR: How do people react to you in Tokyo? They must go nuts.

CA: You know what's great? I'm a pretty petite person, so I just put on a hood or a hat and blend in.

GLAMOUR: What? That does not seem possible! Has being a new mom influenced your music?

CA: Absolutely--my little boy breathes new life into me. That's one of the reasons I decided to go in a playful direction with this album. I've spoken openly about the domestic violence I experienced growing up.

GLAMOUR: Now that you're a mom, is it even harder to grasp the concept of child abuse?

CA: Yes--even watching the news when you hear about babies being shaken. Of course you have compassion for children, but when you have your own, you feel it on a much deeper level. So I'm motivated to speak out even more; to do more charity work; to help children find [safe] homes.

GLAMOUR: Despite your tough childhood, you grew up into a solid person. What do you think when you see people in your industry, like Amy Winehouse, self-destruct?

CA: I'm not a judgmental person, so I can't comment on someone else's background. [As for me], I think I've always had a strong sense of self. My mom brought me up to believe that my talent is a gift and a blessing. But I have definitely made some mistakes that I would never do again.

GLAMOUR: Like what?

CA: When I was 21 and made Stripped, I was pretty distraught about some personal issues coming up from my past. I was going out and partying a lot--as people do at that age--and did some very unhealthy things to deal with the pain. But I was able to say, "OK, hold on."

GLAMOUR: But for some reason, you weren't caught on camera doing it.

CA: Thank God! [Laughs.]

GLAMOUR: You probably couldn't have gotten away with that now.

CA: I don't think so. [It wasn't until] the wave of reality TV that [our culture's] obsession with celebrity got so crazy. I think a lot of people thrive on that stuff.

GLAMOUR: So how do you manage nowadays to avoid paparazzi?

CA: A lot of people go out of their way [to be photographed]; I make a conscious effort to keep me and my family out of the limelight. The other day a paparazzo actually pulled up to my husband on the street and said, "Geez, I know the new house is big, but I've been trying to get a picture of you for months--you never leave the house!" And it's true: I'll go out at night after spending time with my son, but [during the day] I just hang out on my grounds, taking him for walks in the stroller in the backyard where we won't be seen.

GLAMOUR: Has having a child changed your relationship with your own mother?

CA: It's given me a deeper understanding of the things she went through. She had a difficult childhood, and I think she wanted to make sure [I didn't go through that]--[yet] she ended up marrying an abuser. My mom was so giving, almost too much, that she almost forgot about herself many times. So I'm careful to make time for myself. Rather than change who I am for Max, I bring the life lessons I've learned to the table.

GLAMOUR: How do you manage to make time for yourself?

CA: Obviously I didn't do anything today--you're not allowed to look at my nails!

GLAMOUR: How has your relationship with Jordan changed since the baby?

CA: It's brought us closer--we're bonded together for life. Relationships and great marriages are a whole learning and growing process. We're just great teammates.

GLAMOUR: So, how do you guys keep things sexy these days?

CA: We make sure we have Mommy and Daddy nights out. Our child comes first, obviously, but there are certain things you can do: Once we know he's in good hands, we go out late at night and have a few drinks. Then we'll come home, dim the lights and do our thing--and I'm not going into any more detail than that!

well, i'm just glad she dropping her "RAW & GRITTY" sound. Don't get me wrong, it was fun while it lasted, but time to move on. And loose the red lipstick please :D

Wall-E' is a hit

Wall*E posted the highest opening day for a Pixar film EVER. $23.5 million. That puts it close to a $70 million opening weekend! It is also currently the best-reviewed film of 2008 with a 96% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Wanted also did amazingly well. $18.5 million opening day, which could potentially give it a $50 million opening, but $45 million is more likely.

Kate & Lance Have a Beachside Lunch with Goldie Hawn

Lance Armstrong and Kate Hudson have already spent time with each other's kids. On Tuesday, the couple kept their relationship all in the family by hanging out with her mother.

Casually dressed in a gray Nike T-shirt and matching pants, the cycling champ, along with Hudson and her mom, actress Goldie Hawn, met for a late lunch Tuesday afternoon at Ivy at the Shore in Santa Monica, Calif.

The trio, along with an unidentified male, arrived just before 2 p.m. They got some privacy from fellow diners and the throng of paparazzi camped out front by sitting on the patio at the back of the beachside restaurant.

"They looked like they were having a great time and enjoying each other's company," says an onlooker. "Goldie was all smiles. Lance was sitting next to her and they were chatting while Kate was laughing. They were all just really happy."

A tanned Hudson, wearing a long turquoise halter dress, sat on the other side of her beau during the intimate lunch. At the end of the meal, the group left together through the front entrance.

Madonna & Guy Enjoy Dinner – Together! – in N.Y.C.

Diners at New York City's 'Cesca, an Italian eatery on the Upper West Side, got a surprise Tuesday night when Madonna and husband Guy Ritchie walked in, holding hands.

They looked "like a normal couple that just wanted to have a nice dinner out," says an onlooker. "They looked very unassuming. Not like they were looking for attention."

Seasoned New Yorkers are quite accustomed to spotting celebrities at the restaurant (and Madonna does have an apartment in the neighborhood). Still, seeing the queen of pop and her director husband together in public is a rare occurrence – and a meaningful one.

"Everyone was whispering and saying, 'Wow, that was Madonna. She is supposed to be separating from her husband. I can't believe she is here,'" the observer adds.

But Madonna and Ritchie didn't flinch. The couple, who've been plagued by breakup rumors, continued with their cozy, hour-long dinner before leaving – also hand-in-hand.

"Madonna's husband Guy arrived in New York last night to be with his wife and family (not in a last-ditch attempt to save his marriage which does not need saving)," the singer's rep Liz Rosenberg told PEOPLE Tuesday. "There are no plans for Madonna and Guy to divorce."

Joel Madden: No Plans to Marry Nicole Richie

For Nicole Richie and Joel Madden, the wedding bells can wait – at least for a little while.

"We don't have any plans for that right now," Madden told PEOPLE on Wednesday. "We're just happy, and we're being a family, and that's where we're at right now. But marriage means something different to everyone."

As a celebrity DJ at the Oakley/Suzuki Celebrity Ride Day event in Perris, Calif., Madden took turns spinning records, and quelling notions of a summer rush to the altar.

"Right now we're really happy," the Good Charlotte frontman says, "and we're concentrating on our family, and that's what is making us happy right now. We're moving at our own pace."

The new father has his mind now on raising little daughter Harlow. "It's crazy," he says. "Every day she does something new. When she reaches for me, it's awesome! Just watching her grow, it melts me!"

Loni Anderson's Sweet Happily Ever After

Her latest relationship may have been 45 years in the making – but things are looking sweet for Loni Anderson.

The actress, 62, wed folk singer Bob Flick in California on May 17. Strikingly, it was a posed photo in 1963 that first united the two – the same photo that decorates their wedding cake.

As the story goes, the two met at a movie premiere in Minneapolis when Anderson was sent by a local newspaper for a fan photo op with Flick, whose group the Brothers Four scored a hit with their song "Greenfields." The Burt Reynolds ex and Flick – pictured here – are ready to dive into dessert during their reception June 23 at Vibrato Grill Jazz ... Etc. in Bel Air, Calif.

The inscription on the cake reads, "When we met, 5-17-63," indicating they have indeed come full circle – to the day!

Sarah Jessica Parker Eyes New Single-in-City Role

Taking Carrie Bradshaw to the big screen proved a shrewd move for Sarah Jessica Parker – the Sex and the City movie's so far raked in more than $300 million – and now she's eyeing the role of another single urban professional.

The star, 43, is in discussions with Warner Bros. about a screen version of novelist Karen Quinn's The Ivy Chronicles, described by the Hollywood Reporter as an up-to-date take about class and the single woman in Manhattan – though unlike Bradshaw, title character Ivy Ames moves out of the Upper East Side after the double whammy of a job loss and a divorce.

She has to withdraw her children from their expensive private school, though they also provide her with a eureka moment: Ames starts a service to help women land their kids in upper-crust kindergartens.

The trade paper likens The Ivy Chronicles to The Devil Wears Prada meets The Nanny Diaries, with a dash of the TV mini-series The Starter Wife thrown in.

Jerry Weintraub, the honcho behind the Ocean's Eleven franchise, is poised to produce.

Madonna's Rep: No Divorce, No Affair

Madonna's spokeswoman has released an exclusive statement to PEOPLE rejecting reports that the singer's marriage to her film director husband Guy Ritchie is on the rocks.

"Madonna's husband Guy arrived in New York last night to be with his wife and family (not in a last ditch attempt to save his marriage which does not need saving)," Liz Rosenberg told PEOPLE. "There are no plans for Madonna and Guy to divorce."

Rosenberg also denied a published report of a relationship between the singer and New York Yankees star Alex Rodriguez.

"Madonna and Alex have the same manager, Guy Oseary," Rosenberg says. "They have met. They know each other and Madonna took her kids to a Yankees game last week. There's really not anything to comment on beyond that."

Adds Rosenberg: "It's nothing new that people are airing tons of dirty laundry Madonna's way lately – much of it untrue." She joked: "By the way, rumors of Madonna and Lil Wayne are quite exaggerated, as well."

Angelina Jolie's Doctor to Give Update Today

"Angelina Jolie will give birth in Nice," announces the newspaper sign taped to a pole not far from the hospital where the actress is being treated.

Although the pregnant actress has been described by the Nice-Matin newspaper as "the most famous woman on the planet," life goes on outside the hospital virtually unchanged – for now.

While several photographers milled about nearby, only a single camera crew stood outside the main entrance Wednesday morning. But the scene will soon be far less sleepy, now that hospital spokeswoman Nadine Bauer has confirmed that Jolie's doctor, Michel Sussmann, will address the media at 11:30 a.m. ET.

"Madame Jolie's doctor will be updating her condition at the hospital and giving medical details," said Bauer. "Madame Jolie is doing very well." Jolie has even had a few vistors. Beau Brad Pitt dropped by with two special guests Wednesday: daughters Zahara, 3, and Shiloh, 2.

Jolie, who is expecting twins, checked into the medical center this weekend.

Since then, the paper reports, she and Pitt – who already have four children, Maddox, 6, Pax, 4, Zahara and Shiloh – have been staying at a four-room maternity suite overlooking the Bay of Angels.

Time will tell if it's true, as the newspaper claims, that "Madame Pitt" is carrying twin daughters. In the meantime, it seems that Nice-Matin has coined a new definition for VIP – describing it as a "very important pregnancy."

Anne Hathaway's Ex: From Keeper to 'Con Man'?

Of all the dozens of victims dashing Italian businessman Raffaello Follieri allegedly duped, actress Anne Hathaway fell the hardest, friends of the brunette beauty tell PEOPLE in its latest issue, on sale Friday.

After shooting to fame at 18 as a squeaky-clean Disney heroine in The Princess Diaries, Hathaway, 25, thought she had found her prince charming in 30-year-old Follieri, telling PEOPLE in 2006 that he was a keeper. "You can say what you want about it, but we just love each other," the actress said at the time.

Even as some friends say they warned Hathaway about Follieri, she stuck by him for months as allegations of his wrongdoing swirled. Last month, Follieri was arrested on charges of wire-fraud conspiracy and money laundering. Appearing in a Manhattan court on June 24, he was branded a "con man" by federal prosecutors, who accuse him of bilking investors of millions.

"She's a sweet girl, and he seemed like the right kind of guy," says a friend of Hathaway's. "At the end of the day, could she tell you that he was a dirty dealer? No way."

But when Hathaway learned that Follieri's charitable foundation was under investigation by the New York State attorney general for tax irregularities, the actress broke off the relationship. Says a pal: "That was the last straw."

In the aftermath, a source close to the star says her busy work schedule – last month she finished shooting the romantic comedy Bride Wars with Kate Hudson and she has been promoting her current comedy Get Smart – has been a welcome distraction.

"Anne didn't mention [the breakup], and people around her didn't ask," says the source. "She was completely blinded on this one. She loved him and so she didn't see much else until now."

For the full story, including Hathaway's first impression of Follieri and their dinner with his parents a few weeks ago, pick up this week's PEOPLE, on newsstands Friday

'90210' Exclusive: Doherty Heads for the 'Hills'

hose of you who know me know that nothing brings me more happiness than a good, old-fashioned Shannen Doherty item. So it seems only fitting that I should kick off my new EW gig with a juicy yarn about the legendary Hollywood hellraiser. And it's not just any yarn, either -- it's the best yarn ever!

Multiple sources confirm to me exclusively that Doherty is currently engaged in formal talks to -- wait for it, wait for it -- reprise her role of Brenda Walsh on The CW's breathlessly anticipated 90210 update!

(The crowd roars. The crowd's on their feet! The crowd.. is... me!)

According to my Peach Pit mole, Gabe Sachs and Jeff Judah, the producers behind el nuevo 90210, recently met with the tempestuous tabloid mainstay to gauge her interest in returning to the zip code from which she was banished in 1994. And by all accounts, she is interested. "But," whispers an insider with close ties to the reboot, "she wants to know what the story is going to be first." She also wants more money than they're apparently offering.

Yet creative/financial issues may not be the biggest obstacles standing in the way of Doherty's homecoming. The anger-management poster gal has left a long list of enemies in her wake, among them once and possibly future co-stars Tori Spelling and Jennie Garth. Doherty and Garth, in particular, got along so badly, they were like a '90s version of Bette Davis and Joan Crawford. (A fistfight between them was even chronicled in Spelling's recent memoir.) So while Doherty's willingness to return suggests she's ready to let bygones be bygones, the feeling may not be mutual.

"There's still some animosity there," acknowledges a source, who says Garth wasn't exactly jumping for joy upon learning of Doherty's potential hiring. However, counters Garth, "A lot of time has passed, and I'm a big girl. I'd have no problem with her coming on the show."

That still doesn't resolve the pesky issue of Doherty's less-than-stellar rep. "They should demand good behavior and get rid of her quick if they don't get it," muses one top TV producer. "The danger is that the show becomes a big hit, and her participation is seen as essential. If that happens, and she's still a disruptive, dysfunctional actor, then they've got a big mess."

But nearly everyone seems to agree on one thing: It's a risk worth taking. "This is a win-win for all parties," points out a 90210 source. "Shannen has a shot to get back in the public eye and make things right with the show that gave her her career, and the CW can generate some much-needed buzz and guarantee some major sampling of 90210."

Not to mention the fact that I'll get to write more Shannen Doherty stories!

So, what do you think? Does Shannen need 90210 more than it needs her? And would you be more inclined, less inclined or as inclined to watch 90210 with Doherty on board? Sound off in the comments section below!

Kristy Lee Cook Signs Record Deal

(FROM BILLBOARD) — American Idol finalist Kristy Lee Cook has signed a record deal with 19 Recordings/Arista Nashville, the home of past Idol favorites Carrie Underwood and Kellie Pickler. Cook's first album is expected in the fall; she'll record it in between dates on the American Idols Live! Tour 2008, in which she's performing. She also has a single, ''15 Minutes of Shame,'' due to hit country radio in August. The singer had been signed to Arista when she was 17, but she was dropped from the label then, before she recorded any music. (Billboard)

Hold up! 'Arrested Development' movie not yet greenlit

Those Bluths are such teases! EW has learned that no deal — much less a script — is in place for a movie version of the Fox comedy Arrested Development, but that hasn't stopped the actors from chatting about it. Last week, Jeffrey Tambor told EW that the project was a go, but his costar Jason Bateman reinforces what EW has learned, saying that his costar's comments were premature. "They are trying to decide if they can make it for the money they need," quips star Jason Bateman. "Michael Cera is a huge star now...with a huge star attitude to go with it. His salary will probably be the holdup." (Additional reporting by Carrie Bell)

Cohen, Ferrell Set for Sherlock Holmes Comedy

(FROM VARIETY) — Sacha Baron Cohen and Will Ferrell are reuniting for an as-yet-untitled comedy project about Sherlock Holmes. The movie would feature Cohen as the master detective and Ferrell as his assistant, Dr. Watson. It's being written by Etan Cohen (Tropic Thunder) and produced by Judd Apatow and Jimmy Miller, who previously produced Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby, in which the actors costarred. ''Just the idea of Sacha and Will as Sherlock Holmes and Watson makes us laugh,'' Columbia Pictures copresident Matt Tolmach said in Variety. There's no word on when the film is due to go into production; presently, Cohen is at work on Bruno, while Ferrell recently wrapped Land of the Lost and has Step Brothers coming out later this month.

This is the second project featuring Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's legendary sleuth currently in development at a major studio. A drama from director Guy Ritchie is in the works elsewhere.

Holloway joins 'Cool' movie comedy cast

(FROM THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER) — Josh Holloway and Winona Ryder will play former high school sweethearts in Stay Cool, the forthcoming comedy from the Polish brothers (The Astronaut Farmer). The actor known for his role as Sawyer on Lost will join a cast that also includes Hilary Duff, Jon Cryer, Sean Astin, and Chevy Chase. The film, shooting this month in Santa Clarita, Calif., stars Mark Polish as a successful author who returns to his high school to deliver a commencement address; there, he encounters his unrequited high school crush (Ryder) and the jock who was once her boyfriend (Holloway). Mark and Michael Polish wrote the screenplay and are producing the film; Michael is directing.

HANCOOK REVIEW!

In the screwed-up summer diversion Hancock, Will Smith plays a disheveled, hard-drinking, Los Angeles-based superhero referred to on the street by cute kids and peaceful oldies alike as an a--hole. The designation is a punch line in itself, uttered throughout the movie with a glee that challenges profanity conventions in a mainstream publication, since one of the feats Smith sets for himself in his latest attempt at Fourth of July box office superheroism is to apply his kryptonite-resistant personal likability to a character who is, at first glance, a real schmuck. After some sort of accident, the reluctant crimestopper doesn't know who he is or why he's in L.A. (hence the generic name John Hancock); he just knows he possesses otherworldly talents for flying and hurling automobiles, among other attributes useful for surviving in the City of Angels. And at first close encounter, he's an alcohol-soaked curmudgeon with a bum's wardrobe and a really bad attitude. Even those he saves wish he would go be a hero somewhere else.

Hancock can revel in schmuckery, of course, because you and I and cute kids and peaceful oldies worldwide know in advance that there's no way on Hollywood's green earth Will Smith will ever play someone seriously, dangerously unsavory. Charm is the star's armor on either side of the alien-human divide, whether he's a Fresh Prince, a Bad Boy, a Man in Black, the last man alive in New York City, or Muhammad Ali. And so, in the beginning, the movie — part comedy, part action-thriller, and a whole lot of earnest, addled mush about purpose, fate, and angels — lets Smith (who is also one of the producers) have fun goofing on all that has already served him so well as a performer: Here's a hero in need of remedial charm school.

In the story's most original notion (the script is credited to first-timer Vy Vincent Ngo and X-Files staff writer Vince Gilligan), Hancock saves a PR executive named Ray (Jason Bateman). In addition to inviting the hungry superhero over for a thank-you dinner of spaghetti, meatballs, and family togetherness with his dubious, dewy wife (Charlize Theron) and their bright sprite of a son (Friday Night Lights' Jae Head), Ray gets the idealistic brainstorm to rehabilitate Hancock with a personalized image makeover. He aims to turn the mutt into a better person as well as a more super hero. The PR pro also harbors an unabashedly idealistic desire to make the world a better place by encouraging rich companies to donate lifesaving products to the poor — a business goal that, no matter how noble, comes across like an unasked-for lesson in a movie released when school's out.

The scenes of Hancock improving his presentation skills, complete with a Queer Eye-ready custom costume, are droll, with a big assist from Bateman and the attitude of controlled exasperation he perfected on Arrested Development. (Ray's wife is more skeptical of Hancock's capacity for rehabilitation, and she demonstrates that by giving their guest what appears to be the stink eye. Their son seems to think the visitor is as cool as Will Smith.) But then the movie goes someplace else, a direction not to be revealed except to say that Hancock the jaunty, jokey riff on the screwed-up inner emotional life of a traditionally ironclad superhero becomes Hancock the icky lesson in the importance of personal responsibility, loyalty, and continued family togetherness. Also, of making the world a better place, and keeping Will Smith's income steady.

And, oh yes, there's that talk of angels, or is it some sci-fi race of extraterrestrials who'd feel at home in Battlefield Earth? To further confound clarity, director Peter Berg (The Kingdom) and cinematographer Tobias Schliessler favor a visual style that can best be described as Serious Focus on the Eyeball. Arty, randomly inserted extreme close-ups on a quadrant of Smith's lovely face, or Theron's, or Bateman's, are meant to convey intensity of emotional content. Really, what moviegoers hanker for is a hero to step in and adjust the depth of focus to something suitable for a cute movie about a magical dude who smashes tall buildings with a single bound. C+

Young Jeezy stars in Ice Cube comedy

(FROM THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER) — Young Jeezy's first movie role shouldn't be much of a stretch: he'll play a sought-after rapper in Janky Promoters, a film written by rapper-turned-filmmaker Ice Cube. Cube and Mike Epps will also star, as the shady, inept concert promoters of the title. Directing the Dimension Films release will be Marcus Raboy, who also directed Cube's comedy Friday After Next. Jeezy (real name: Jay Jenkins) topped the Billboard album chart in 2006 with The Inspiration; the rapper is currently preparing his third album, The Recession, for release on Def Jam.
